At the County Fair
My friend and I, age thirteen,
went to a county fair.
We gawked at crafts,
canned goods, sheep,
rabbits and cows.
We watched
as one cow gave birth,
and only hours later,
we saw the calf take
its first steps.
I also stared
at a group of people
who looked different than most.
I learned they had
developmental disabilities.
I had no idea
I was seeing
my future occupation.
You never know what you’ll
encounter at the county fair.
