PAD 10-3 Blank of Blank

Friend of Mine

I have not seen Him face to face
But I have seen Him by His grace
I have not heard His gentle voice
But at His Words I do rejoice

I have not felt His hand in mine
But I’m abiding in the vine
His fragrance is unknown to me
But prayer is incense pure and free

I have not tasted Heaven’s treat
But fellowship in Him is sweet
Intangible to eye or ear
But I know He’s always near

PAD 10-2 Blank of Blank, PB warm

Cup of Warmth

The snow falls softly on my lawn
The thick, warm drapes are tightly drawn
My sweater’s soft and brings me peace
My socks are of alpaca fleece

The cold stays out while I am in
I’m covered up from toe to chin
I dream of summer, sip my tea
This cup of warmth is what I need

PAD 10-1 Blank of Blank

Brush of Paint

I think about what could be done
If I was out having some fun
This gets tiring, is my complaint
Swish, swish, swish goes my brush of paint

I think this color isn’t right
It’s kind of blue but should be white
Wouldn’t periwinkle be quaint?
Swish, swish, swish goes my brush of paint

With these colors I’ll be content
Before my time and money’s spent
I need to practice some restraint
Swish, swish, swish goes my brush of paint

If I hold fast and paint away
I surely will finish some day
I can do this, I will not faint
Swish, swish, swish goes my brush of paint

PAD 9-2 Reflection

Reflections on Groups

Everybody has their nuts
No if, ands, or buts
There are troublemakers in every group
The world’s a mix of nuts and soup

Muslims, Christians
Politicians
Parents, teachers
Children, preachers
Rich, poor and in between
Army, Navy and Marines
Artists, actors, writers, musicians
Even those called to missions
Police, firefighters, those in flight
Brown, olive, black and white

Yes, it’s true.
Even the angels in Heaven had their nuts

PAD 8-3 pet

I’ve Been Adopted

After my cat Snickers died, no more pets.
I don’t want to take my time for their care—
All the expense, the cleaning, and the vets,
But an orange cat seems to say, “Au contraire!”
When I’m in the yard, he visits me there,
And tries to convince me to take him in.
He seems to think we would make quite a pair.
Doesn’t belong to me, but I to him.

As Junior Suns Himself

I have a friend I get for church,
For she’s confined to a wheelchair.
And every time my heart’s a-lurch
When on her step, her dog lies there.
It might be more than she can bear,
If that old dachshund up and dies.
I’d turn ‘round, if I didn’t care,
Just so I wouldn’t hear her cries.

They wonder how I could want more

PAD 7-2 clothing

My White Skirt

When I was sixteen, Mom gave me
thirty dollars to buy a prom dress.
My boyfriend and I found
a cute cream floor-length skirt
and blue blouse of crinkly material
which came to sixty dollars.

He threw in the extra thirty.
I told Mom I had to spend
all the money she gave me,
not admitting the real cost.
I kept the skirt all these years
hoping someday it would fit again.

It had been out of sight and mind
when my daughter was that size.
Now, my storage space flooded
and the skirt’s moldy and ruined.
It would have been better if I
would have given it away long ago.

PJs

My husband always wears pajamas now
He doesn’t care what other people think
To store or docs or church, and I allow
My husband always wears pajamas now
A stroke survivor I won’t disavow
As long as he does not don flaming pink
My husband always wears pajamas now
He doesn’t care what other people think

PAD 6-3 opening

Waiting

Sometimes, finding an opening
in a conversation is like Jesus’s
proverbial camel going through
an eye of a needle. Frequently,
it’s easier to let a person babble,
while you say, “Uhhuh,” and nod.
By the time you find the wee hole,
you may be too tired to crawl through.
It’s like breaking into a house
through a dachshund’s doggy door.

PAD 6-2 Opening

Open Gate

I imagine walking through the open gate
at the end of this life and meeting Jesus.
We’ll chat about my life, and when I see
things as He sees them, we will laugh.

But the “pop!” drives you crazy
Truly, I’m not a fan

PAD 5-2 pleasure or displeasure

Pet Peeves

Elm bugs bugging me here
Having a deadline that’s near
Computer glitches
Not fitting my britches
Giving into my fear

Nothing good on TV
When people ignore poor me
Becoming old
Catching a cold
When I run out of tea

Breathing in cigarette smoke
Wanting to travel but broke
Having to wait
Not thinking straight
When nobody’s getting my joke

Misuse of the word literally
Expecting me to write for free
Upstaged by phone
Feeling alone
People who just like to be

PAD 5-1 pleasure or displeasure

My Favorite Things

Tea with sugar and cream
A bath with bubbles and steam
A walk in the rain
A gospel refrain
A poem with a comical theme

A trip to somewhere unknown
A friendly chat on the phone
Hiking the trails
Watching some whales
Reading a book all alone

Kayaking a lake or a bay
A drive on a fine autumn day
My hubby’s kiss
Shopping with Sis
Knowing God hears when I pray

Trips with my daughter and son
Laughing and having some fun
Painting a mess
Living southwest
Working, then resting when done

(a triolet)

Through kindness, let your light shine
Dispel the darkness and the gloom
Let compassion and love entwine

Dispel the darkness and the gloom

PAD 3-1 threes

When I Dream

When I dream and fall in deeper realms,
Little snippets of life taunt and tease
To make sense of that which overwhelms.

They will dance all about till I wake.
Most of them I forget when I rise,
And the images fade to opaque.

Some seem stark, clear and bold to my eyes.
Then I wonder what they’re all about.
Are they there to confuse or make wise?

The beginning and end, the a and z

PAD 1-2 Once Upon a Time

The Swap

Once upon a time a fairy flitted about,
bored at looking at the same old forest.
She decide an adventure was in order,
so she flitted off as far as her wings
would carry her Alas, that was just
to the forest’s edge. But it was new
and wide and she was delighted
at the expanse laid out before her.

But soon a shadow overcame her
and claws snatched her up
and off she went into the air.
The fairy was terrified, of course,
but she had to admire
the countryside below.
After a while the bird plopped
her into an nest with young birds.

At first, the fairy thought she might become
their next meal but they were her size.
The mama lovingly fed her birds
one at a time, yucky, wiggly worms.
Next she came to the fairy
who was always taught to eat
what was offered, when she was a guest.
So she closed her eyes and swallowed.

She imagined she was eating her mom’s
delicious safflower bread.
Soon momma bird tucked her in
along with the baby birds.
Not far away, Mama fairy
looked about for her daughter.
Instead she found a baby bird.

She let it sleep in her daughter’s bed.
But what would she do now?
The next day she ventured farther
than she ever wanted her daughter to go.
She saw the bird nest high in the cliffs
with the birdy heads poking out.
One looked familiar. She made the
switch and they lived happily ever after.
