The River’s Shore
We walked down a dirt
road
past shabby houses
built on stilts, and
then stepped
on planks of boards
which kept our feet
out of the mud.
This led us to a dock
where long, narrow
wooden boats awaited
with roofs that
sheltered us from the sun.
As we stepped from dock
to boat
the Peruvian guide
held out his hand
and with a smile
greeted us
to the Nanay River.
His nephew manned the
motor
and soon we sped
to wide open spaces
of the Amazon.
