(Rondeau)

We Thirst

An empty well is deep and dry
Appearance of cool water nigh
Inside mere hollow echoes call
A disappointment to us all
It leaves us with a thirsty sigh

Rejoicing reins when way up high
Dark clouds drift slowly in the sky
The pouring rain will soon enthrall
“We thirst!” we cry.

We may appear in full supply
Of all we need to get on by
We’re like the well’s echoic wall
What we have indeed is small
On living water, we rely
“We thirst!” we cry.
