Poetic Asides Expectations

Expectations

Expectations can trip you up
You want a cat and get a pup
Expect a prince you get a toad
Go to work, sent down the road

You expect to be happy and succeed
End up down and sad indeed
I’ve learned to lay expectations aside
Though it means giving up some pride

Now I try to be grateful and content
Though it’s not my natural bent
I pray what I want down to the letter
But if I don’t get it, I’ll hope for better
