October 2 comfort food from childhood Poetic Bloomings


Baking

Dad loved lemon meringue pies
and on his birthday, May 31st,
Mom baked them to perfection.
But what I remember most—
the chocolate ones for us five sisters.

And on other special occasions
our small house would fill with fragrance
of freshly baked bread and cinnamon rolls
warm and satisfying, not only physically,
but emotionally, as well.
