The photograph of the barren
shoe
echoed the newspaper headline,
“Mother Killed in Car Crash”—
the sinister effect of drunk
driving.
He was only a mechanic.
How could he raise three children
alone?
He cooked the spaghetti.
He filled the bathtub.
One task at a time.
That’s how he’d do it.
