Last- Poetic Asides

 Ocean Plans

The last time I saw the ocean,

we hiked the island covered with deadwood.

We laughed and took pictures.

We didn’t think about kicking off our shoes

and wading in the waves going in and out.

I don’t know why.

Too much in a hurry?

Too cold? Too rocky?

Didn’t want to mess up my brother-in-law’s car?

Next time, I hope, will be soon.

I don’t care how much we’re in a hurry.

How cold or rocky it is.

Who’s driving whatever car.

I’m going to kick off my shoes

and wade in the waves going in and out.

A land-locked Coloradan

must make the most of an ocean visit.
